The Greyhounds put seven players on first two Northwest League baseball and softball all-star teams

NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: WADE EVANSON - Senior first baseman Abbey Zawadney prepares to take a swing during a Greyhounds game earlier this spring. Zawadney was a NWL first team selection. Gaston was well represented on the 2017 Northwest League All-League softball and baseball teams, putting seven players on the first and second teams and having five selected as honorable mention — all while collecting another extra-special award.

The Greyhound softball team had three first-teamers, including senior first baseman Abbey Zawadney, junior catcher Taylor Bassel and junior shortstop Julia Clark. In addition, junior pitcher Charity Hall, junior centerfielder Daisy Clark and freshman outfielder Alix Heisler were voted to the second team, while freshman Anna Cutright and senior Sammy Moore were selected as honorable mention.

Knappa's Kaitlyn Truax was voted the league's Most Valuable Player, Vernonia's Michael Fetch was the Coach of the Year and Nestucca was awarded the Sportsmanship Award.

The Gaston softballers finished second in the Northwest League with a 10-2 league record, losing in a first-round state playoff game to Kennedy.

On the boys side, senior catcher Luke Anderson was the Greyhounds' only first- or second-team selection. He was voted onto the all-league second team, while junior shortstop Jarred Tallent, senior outfielder Bryce Cullers and senior pitcher Dylan Duckworth were selected as honorable mention.

Knappa's Dale Takelo was voted the league Most Valuable Player and Neah-Kah-Nie's Rob Herder was selected Coach of the Year.

The Greyhounds were also awarded the league Sportsmanship Award despite struggling on the diamond.
