The Forest Grove sophomore earned sixth place in the girls 6A long jump on the first day of the track and field state meet in Eugene to lead all Forest Grove competitors. That landed her a spot on the awards podium, as medals go to the top eight finishers in every event. A year ago, she finished 14th in her state meet debut.

This time around, Villalobos qualified for the nine-woman final in eighth place thanks to a mark of 16 feet, 10½ inches on her opening try. In the final, she improved to 17-2 for sixth. Barlow’s Danelle Woodcock won with a jump of 19-0.

Villalobos also ran in the preliminaries of the 300-meter hurdles, where she finished 14th in 49.31.

Also competing for the Vikings on Friday, Seth Berdahl ran with the lead pack for most of the boys 3,000 before finishing 11th in 8:57.68 in his first state meet on the track. Tate de Sully was 10th in the shot put (47-9¼), while Rubi Vergara-Grindell took 12th in the girls 3,000 (10:55.97).

The Vikings will contest two track finals on Saturday. Middle distance ace Geremia Lizier-Zmudzinski will try to pick up his second state title in the 1,500, which starts at 1:53 p.m. The Georgetown-bound senior won in a sophomore class record time in 2012 before injuries derailed much of his junior season.

Lizier-Zmudzinski could also run a leg on Forest Grove’s 4x400 relay team, which will run at 5:56 p.m.
