Forest Grove picks up three individual titles at Beisell invite

The host Vikings record nine top-six finishes and the Guerra brothers square off in the 113-pound championship match

The Forest Grove wrestling team did not quite win its own invitational, but it did put in a pretty solid showing and also created a little program history.

The host Vikings took fifth place in the 10-team Bob Beisell Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, finishing just three points outside of third. Additionally, in what is believed to be a first for the program, brothers Christian and Maya Guerra wrestled against each other in the 113-pound final.

Forest Grove ended the day with 141½ points. Sunset won the event with 185½ points, followed by Century (179½), Beaverton (144½) and South Albany (142½).

Three wrestlers led the way for the Vikings by winning their respective weight classes. In addition to the aforementioned Christian Guerra, Catarino Rodriguez topped the 220 field and Cody Smith won at 138.

In the 113-pound final, Christian Guerra, a junior, won by major decision against younger brother Maya, a freshman. Frank Johnson said he checked in with a couple of program old-timers, and it is believed that the match marked the first time in Forest Grove history that two brothers wrestled each other in a tournament final.

Rodriguez squeaked out his tournament championship with a 9-8 decision against Beaverton’s Ryland Boyer, while Smith turned back Torben Billow, also of Beaverton, by a 6-4 decision.

Maya Guerra was the Vikings’ sole runner-up at the competition. Matthew Johnson and Lucas Higginbotham added top-three results.

After dropping a 7-6 decision to Sunset’s Luke Batten in the 120 semifinals, Johnson rebounded with two victories to finish third. In the 106 quarterfinals, Higginbotham lost a 20-8 major decision to eventual champion Tyler Cooper of St. Helens before earning a bye in the consolation round and then rattling off three straight wins to claim third.

Other place-winners for Forest Grove were Chad Smith, fourth at 132; Martin Rivera, fifth at 145; and Rudy Tinoco, sixth at 113.

The Vikings, who also competed in a dual meet against Hillsboro last week, are now off until this Saturday, when they travel to Tigard for a tournament.
