Free Cornelius events aim to connect community

by: COURTESY PHOTO - The 234th Army Band tours Oregon and will make a stop in Cornelius this month. The city of Cornelius is hosting free concerts and outdoor movie screenings throughout the summer in an effort to connect community members.

July 20 will bring the first of two free concerts. The 234th Army Band will play a range of contemporary music. Since 1947, the band has provided musical support for Oregon troops, toured the state and entertained Oregonians. The mission of an Army band is to “provide music throughout the spectrum of military operations to instill in our forces the will to fight and win, foster the support of our citizens, and promote our national interests at home and abroad.”

The concert will start at 6 p.m. at Harleman Park. There will be a free ice cream social during the intermission and families can bring picnics.

On July 30, the city will welcome the Mariachi Portland Band.

Free outdoor family movie screenings will take place in August. At dusk (around 8 p.m.), families can bring picnic dinners and the kids to watch “The Sandlot,” “Mr. Peabody & Sherman,” and “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” Aug. 1, 8 and 15, respectively.

The city will also host a National Night Out Against Crime event Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 5:30 p.m. The first Tuesday of August is recognized nationally as the day of National Night Out Against Crime, which focuses on law enforcement, businesses, civic groups and crime-prevention programs such as Neighborhood Watch.
