Vegan biologist speaks at Pacific

by: COURTESY PHOTO - Jonathan Balcombe Jonathan Balcombe will be at Pacific University in Forest Grove at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, to present "Animal Lessons from a Vegan Biologist."

Balcombe — chairman of Animal Studies with the Humane Society University — has three biology degrees, including a Ph.D. in ethology, the study of animal behavior.

Born in England but raised in New Zealand and Canada, Balcombe has lived in the U.S. since 1987.

Formerly senior research scientist with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Balcombe has published more than 45 scientific papers on animal behavior and animal protection.

Balcombe has written four books, "The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure," "Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals," "Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good" and "The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, and Recommendations."

He is currently at work on a new book about the inner lives of fish and a novel titled "After Meat."

The talk will be in Marsh Hall, Room 216, and is sponsored by the Center for Peace & Spirituality and the Animal Club.
