Gaston eatery squawks onto scene

Screamin Chicken serves up fresh food diner-style

by: NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD - The Screamin Chicken Diner, a long-awaited Gaston eatery, has been busy during its first two weeks. The Screamin’ Chicken opened last week in Gaston.

With no other details besides the name, a mind could wander — is it a fly-by-night chicken factory or the home of a local poultry hoarder?

What a pleasant surprise to find out the Screamin’ Chicken is a delightful new eatery.

After opening last week, locals have a new spot to go to for classic diner food.

The building, most recently used for the Gaston Grill, is now fulfilling dreams 20 years in the making for Jeannette Noble.

Homey barn-red interior walls, local landscape photographs that came with the place and a real-wood diner counter installed by Noble’s husband, Garry White, add to the building’s comfortable setting.

The owners’ quirky sense of humor expresses itself with a stuffed chicken mascot and a framed Hershey bar containing instructions to break the glass in case of emergency.

Noble, who said she thought of the name decades ago, has been looking for the right spot to open her business. After heading to Gaston for a concert, she parked in her future restaurant’s lot. She knew instantly it was the place.

“It’s small but not too small, and it’s in a great little town,” said Noble, who used to own a restaurant in Hillsboro.

When her offer was accepted on her birthday, she set to work making it happen.

When she first thought of the name, she toyed with serving only breakfast and egg-centered foods, but the menu includes lunch and dinner, with the most important meal of the day — breakfast — served at all hours.

Omelets, pancakes, waffles, hash browns, grits, burgers, fries, sandwiches, grilled cheese, salads, soups and milkshakes are all made fresh in the back.

Noble said she’ll be adding more items and coming up with dinner specials.

Noble said they buy a lot of their produce from Jubilee Farms in Gaston and some from an organic produce supplier in Portland because “it’s better and healthier.”

The Screamin’ Chicken is open every day 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cash and checks are accepted, but not credit cards — yet.
