Jazz plus!

Rich Wetzel and his 15-piece Groovin' Higher Orchestra pose outside the Stonegate Restaurant and Bar in Tacoma, where they play once a month. Not pictured are the band's guiding spirits, which range from Lou Rawls, James Brown and Chuck Berry to Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, Ides of March and Wetzel's hero, Maynard Ferguson. Next Friday, April 19, the big band brings its eclectic mix of jazz, rock, Latin and funk to the Walters Cultural Arts Center, 527 E. Main St. in Hillsboro. Lead trumpeter Wetzel, who has played and put together horn sections for everyone from The Four Tops and The Temptations to The Ojays and Wayne Newton, calls his band "an all-star ensemble of incredible players. And our singer, Steve Stefanowicz, blind since birth, is simply amazing." The group's song list includes popular favorites such as "Watermelon Man," "Brazil," "Tobacco Road," "Johnny Be Good," "Groove Blues," "Georgia," and "Children of Sanchez." Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of show. Call 503-615-3485 or go to brownpapertickets.org to order.
