Team sings 'words that unite us all'
My husband and I attended the preseason opener game for Forest Grove High School Girls Varsity Soccer on Aug. 28. As is the tradition, the announcer asked the audience and players to stand and face the flag for the playing of the national anthem.
I had been eyeing the Forest Grove High School football team that was practicing on the grass fields adjacent to the grandstands, wondering if they would pause during the national anthem. They did. Every single one of those young men and their coaches stood still, facing the flag as we waited for the music to begin ... and waited ... and waited. The music never began (technical difficulty I suppose), and then the crowd realized that the football team had begun to sing the national anthem!
At first, amused laughter rippled through the crowd, and then voices joined in as we were humbled by the football team singing the words that unite us all. What a moment. I was so proud of those young men for honoring their coach's request that they begin to sing in the silence, for respecting the girls soccer teams and most of all for uniting to respect their country's flag!
