A Forest Grove woman became a millionaire overnight, after buying a Powerball ticket earlier this week.
Teresa Avalos-Gomez received a $1 million check on Friday morning, Aug. 11. Avalos-Gomez, who works as a nursery supervisor, bought a Powerball ticket in the Mini Mart at 2705 Pacific Ave. in Forest Grove Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Powerball is a multi-state lottery the Oregon Lottery participates in.
Avalos-Gomez plans to use the money first to pay off her mortgage, according to Patrick Johnson of the Oregon State Lottery.
When Avalos-Gomez took her ticket to the store the next day to check the numbers, she couldn't believe she had a winning ticket, Johnson said, and went home to check and recheck the numbers online with her family.
"She thought for sure she only won $100 until I handed her the check," said Johnson. "She and her family are very excited."
Mini Mart will get $10,000 — 1 percent — of the money.
Avalos-Gomez was one of more than 14,000 Powerball players who won after Wednesday night's drawing. Oregon winners took home more than $1,064,000, with Avalos-Gomez claiming the top prize. Prizes ranged from the $1 million ticket — where the player hit five numbers but missed the Powerball — to winning tickets worth $4 each.
The last $1 million Powerball winner in Oregon was Steven Dery of Coquille in July 2016. The top Powerball prize ever won by an Oregonian was $340 million.
