A 68-year-old Hillsboro man drowned on Sunday evening at Hagg Lake, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
At 6:42 p.m. on Sunday, deputies responded to reports of a missing swimmer at the major Western Washington County recreation site.
Bystanders told deputies the man, later identified as Mark Allan Cuddigan, had been swimming with a friend in Bobcat Cove in the north end of the lake. Cuddigan went under the water, and had not been seen since.
Deputies located Cuddigan's body in the water around 2 a.m., Sheriff spokesperson Jeff Talbot said, and Gaston Fire District assisted in recovering Cuddigan's body.
Talbot said there was no evidence of alcohol or foul play, and said deputies believe Cuddigan was not wearing a life jacket.
The Washington County Medical Examiner declined to release any additional details.
Talbot said swimmers should remember to take advantage of free life jackets provided at Hagg Lake this week as temperatures approach all-time record highs.
