Dylan T. Sullivan, a former Forest Grove High School boys' basketball coach, was indicted July 18 by a Deschutes County grand jury on seven sex-related felony charges stemming from incidents in 2013 while he worked as a teacher and assistant coach in central Oregon's Bend-LaPine School District.
The incidents involved two then-minor females who were students at La Pine High School.
The charges against Sullivan, 29, were read in Deschutes County Circuit Court last Tuesday: two counts of luring a minor; one count of online sexual corruption of a child in the second degree; one count of sexual abuse in the third degree; and three counts of attempted use of a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.
The indictment, dated July 13, followed testimony from the two alleged victims, a Deschutes County Sheriff's deputy and a state trooper.
Sullivan grew up in Forest Grove and graduated from Forest Grove High School in 2007.
During a June 15 arraignment hearing, prosecutors told a Deschutes County Circuit Court judge Sullivan had phone-sex conversations with a 16-year-old girl while he was a teacher and basketball coach at La Pine High School in 2013-14.
They also said Sullivan called the minor female, who kept stats for the La Pine basketball team, "a dirty girl," invited her over to his house and asked her to masturbate while he masturbated.
Prosecutors asked Judge Beth Bagley to raise Sullivan's security amount from $30,000 to $150,000, but she declined, saying he had complied with the conditions of his release and did not appear to be a flight risk.
Those conditions include having no contact with the alleged victims; having no contact with any minors; and having no communication with minors directly or indirectly via phone, text message, email or social media.
Sullivan currently teaches and coaches basketball at Lakeview High School in southern Oregon's Lake County School District. He is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case, district officials confirmed.
Sullivan was represented at last month's hearing by Portland attorney Scott Upham, a former Washington County deputy district attorney, who claimed at the arraignment that the police reports on the case had "been lost." Upham has not returned calls for comment from the News-Times.
Sullivan was arrested May 19 in La Pine. He was booked at the county jail and released Saturday, May 20, after posting 10 percent of his $30,000 bail.
Bend-La Pine School District spokeswoman Julianne Repman told the News-Times that Sullivan taught language arts at La Pine Middle School on a one-year temporary teaching contract during the 2014-15 school year. He was also the assistant football coach and assistant boys' basketball coach at La Pine High School during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years.
Sullivan coached boys' basketball at Forest Grove High in 2012-13.
Upham said Sullivan is now living in Forest Grove with his parents. His next court appearance is set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, when he is expected to enter a plea on the grand jury charges.
