The two students were honored at the club’s April 2 meeting at Pacific University during a ceremony attended by their parents and administrators from both schools.

An active student, New has taken many advanced placement (AP), honors and language classes during her high school career. She is also involved with music, playing violin in the school orchestra while also studying the harp. Off-campus, New is a dancer who teaches at Forest Grove Dance Arts, participates in her church youth group and serves dinners for the Family Promise program.

In her nomination, Haley was described as “a very determined young lady. She clearly enjoys helping others and is extremely artistic and gifted.”

Hernandez was singled out for his caring attitude and the work he does helping his peers in class, oftentimes helping other students when they can’t see the board in the front of the room. “When teachers scold Deangel for talking during lecture, it is common for the student he was talking to to explain that Deangel was actually clarifying the teacher’s point,” the nomination form read. “Many students want to sit by Deangel because they respect him and know he is a resource for them.”

Described as self-motivated, Hernandez participates in the Boys and Girls Club after-school program at NAMS and will be a volunteer at the Oregon Zoo this summer.

Recipients of the Rotary Youth Citizen of the Month receive a certificate and a $25 gift certificate to Frye’s Action Athletics.  The awards are selected by school administrators and are rotated between Banks, Forest Grove and Gaston high schools.

Forest Grove Rotary was founded in 1924. To learn more about the club and about Rotary, visit fgrotary.com, facebook.com/fgrotary or follow the group on Twitter at twitter.com/fgrotary.
