Forest Grove board hears achievement compact update

Adjustments to ed agreements scheduled for fall

The Forest Grove School District has met many components of Oregon’s educational achievement compacts, and Assistant Superintendent John O’Neill told school board members April 14 night the progress “is good news.”

The achievement compacts represent agreement with a set of goals for student progress between the Oregon Educational Investment Board (OEIB) and all K-12 school districts, educational service districts, colleges and universities. Key elements are graduation rates, post-secondary enrollment, third-grade reading and math proficiency, sixth-grade attendance and ninth-graders entering tenth-grade with six credits and 90 percent attendance.

“We’ve already met the sixth- and ninth-grade ‘not-chronically-absent’ targets, as well as the four-year graduation [rate] for disadvantaged students,” said O’Neill, who added he would bring back any changes in the compacts for board action and approval next fall. “What you’re looking at are projections. We expect to have exact numbers in September.”

Board members also thanked Sodexo, the district’s food service provider, for a $1,000 scholarship for a graduating senior. “We appreciate and thank you for all you do for the district,” said chairman John Hayes.

The board presented a “Super Star” award to Cheryl Plews of Forest Grove for her volunteer work with students in math and reading.

Also last Monday, the district budget committee held its second public meeting at the administration office on Main Street. Superintendent Yvonne Curtis will present her 2014-15 budget message at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, and on Monday, June 16 the board is scheduled to adopt a final budget after a public hearing.
