Local scouts feted for service

Archbishop passes out Catholic scouting emblems in Portland Jan. 26


Archbishop Alexander K. Sample and the Archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting will present Catholic scouting emblems to 78 young men and women from 31 parishes and missions across western Oregon and Clark County, Wash., on Sunday, Jan. 26 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland.

Scouts, family members and friends will gather at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland for Mass at 2 p.m. and the annual presentation of the emblems. A reception will follow. Earning awards are the following local scouts:

n St. Francis of Assisi parish in Roy — Ryan Grossman of Forest Grove;

n St. Matthew parish in Hillsboro — Ezekial Arevelo, Sam Callies, Logan De Santis, Peter Fillo, Audreyanna Foster, Josiah Foster, Kaila Foster, Kyle Rabe, Dominic Schmitz and Matthew Wanner; and

n Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Verboort — Kyle Hughes of Banks.

In addition, five scouts will receive the Frank Prater Award, which recognizes scouts who earn all four Boy Scout Religious Emblems (Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei, Ad Altari Dei and Pius XII). Local awardees include Josiah Foster and Matthew Wanner of St. Matthew Church in Hillsboro.

Scouting units are sponsored by parishes, Catholic schools and many Knights of Columbus Councils.
