Shoes are on the way to the Philippines

Tens of thousands of pairs of shoes are on their way to displaced survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, and a Forest Grove resident has had a hand in their delivery.

Jeff Duyck, part owner of Portland-based Global Footwear Enterprises, spent three days last week in an area wearhouse helping to package more than 30,000 pairs of shoes for shipment to the devastated southeast Asian country.

Global, which works with other groups to collect shoes and clothing to aid disaster relief efforts, partnered with Good Samaritan Ministries in the project. Two shipping containers filled with shoes were scheduled to leave Portland Friday, and another should be on its way this week, Duyck said. Among the companies contributing shoes was Korkers Boots of Portland.

Duyck and a team of volunteers took donated shoes out of their boxes, fastened pairs together and got them ready for loading. Global Footwear, a recycling operation that serves as a clearinghouse to ship donated shoes to Third World countries, also will send 200 boxes of clothing from area churches to areas damaged by the typhoon, which hit Nov. 2.
