A CRUSH on CARS

Concours crowd strolls among stellar autos under clear-blue skies

by: NEWS-TIMES PHOTO: CHASE ALLGOOD - Perusing merchandise on the Concours dElegance-hosted used car lot was a popular activity during the all-day show Sunday. This years Concours drew a large crowd to Pacific University in Forest Grove.Hovering near his light-and-dark-green 1927 LaSalle Cabriolet, Jeff Smith grinned at the thought of an auto restoration memory.

“I gave it to a guy who understands everything there is to know about this car,” said Smith, who hails from Lebanon, Ore. “He said it would take one year and X-number of dollars. Three years and three times that much money later, it was done.”

Sunday was Smith’s fourth appearance at Forest Grove’s Concours d’Elegance — “I come because they let me in,” he joked — and as he stood on the lush lawn at Pacific University, he insisted it was unlikely he’d earn a prize.

“I don’t come expecting to win,” Smith noted.

As luck would have it, though, he was mistaken. The Cabriolet took second place in the C3 category: classic open cars from 1925 to 1934.

It might have been the snappy, two-toned custom paint job that attracted the judges, or it could have been the original wood spokes on the car’s wheels. Whatever the magic formula, Smith surely took pleasure in the affirmation.

“This car has been in my family since I was 14,” he said. “Originally it was a red body with black trim. I bought it from my mother — she said ‘It’s either time for me to sell it or you need to buy it.’” by: NEWS-TIMES PHOTOS: CHASE ALLGOOD - A rosebud sits atop a 1934 Chrysler CB owned by Hillsboro resident Lois Hanberg at the 41st Concours dElegance car show in Forest Grove, held July 21 at Pacific University.

James Toothacker of Clackamas and Kurt Leipzig of Portland carpooled to take in Concours, put on by the Rotary Club of Forest Grove. The men, who work together at Marque Motors in southwest Portland, enjoyed the change of pace as they strolled past a row of vintage cars.

“This is a really excellent show,” said Leipzig, who has been to Concours in the past. “It’s kind of a diversion from what we do during the week.”

“We fix Porsches for a living,” explained Toothacker, a newbie to the annual auto extravaganza. “It’s great that they have a little bit of everything, from old electric cars to modern models.”

The 41st version of Concours drew thousands of people to town on a day that presented “ideal conditions” for show-goers, said Rotarian Jerry Frye.

by: NEWS-TIMES PHOTOS: CHASE ALLGOOD - Below, a show attendee snaps a photo of one of the 300 autos that caught her eye during the one-day event.“I’ve been here since 4:45 a.m., and ever since the gates opened there just has been so much interest,” said Frye, who was in charge of concessions. “You put this super weather together with a great collection of more than 300 cars, and you can’t miss.”

For participant Robert Schultheis of Vancouver, Wash., showing his 1967 seafoam green Lincoln Continental was loads of fun.

“This is the best riding and driving car I own,” he told a group of enthusiasts gathered around his spot near Marsh Hall. “I bought it two years ago from the original owner — she’s 92 and couldn’t drive anymore.

“I think of it as the ultimate date car … there’s lots of room in the back seat.”

Worth about $30,000 today, Schultheis said the Lincoln boasted a quadraphonic 8-track stereo and a presidential-style white vinyl top. “It’s definitely a classic,” he said to his audience.
