Teen charged in graffiti case

Cornelius police also find drug evidence in 15-year-olds room

Drawn by a report of marijuana smoking, Cornelius police found a bedroom full of gang-related graffiti and arrested a 15-year-old boy on drug- and graffiti-related charges last week.

The call from an apartment complex in the 500 block of North Adair Street came in just before noon on April 3: several suspected gang members were congregating and smoking marijuana.

Approaching an apartment, officers saw some teens running from its back yard and smelled a strong marijuana odor. They spoke to a 15-year-old resident of the apartment, who “admitted to smoking marijuana” and also to “selling marijuana to his friends” out of his home to support his own habit, according to the Cornelius police report.

The boy's parents were not home at the time.

Police seized scales, packaging material and more than four grams of marijuana from the boy’s bedroom.

Also in the bedroom, officers found gang-related graffiti covering the walls, along with other evidence indicating the boy was “unlawfully applying graffiti” to various businesses in Cornelius.

The graffiti matched that found on several businesses and a vehicle around Tenth Avenue and Adair Street after early-morning vandalism on March 13.

Police arrested the boy for violating his probation, distributing marijuana and graffiti vandalism. They turned him over to the Washington County Juvenile Department and are continuing to investigate his connection to other graffiti cases, as well as his marijuana connections.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Cornelius Police at 503-359-1881.
