Wrestlers finish sixth at weekend tourney

All seven of the teams wrestlers find their way to the awards stand

by: ESTACADA NEWS: PARKER LEE - Estacadas Zack Jones works to turn his opponent at last weekends Carey Larson memorial tournament. SANDY — The Estacada Rangers were few in number compared to most of the other teams at the Carey Larson Memorial wrestling tournament at Sandy on Saturday, but the wrestlers they did have brought their A games. Estacada finished sixth as a team as all seven participants took sixth place or better individually.

The Rangers’ day was highlighted by Donny Wenlund who won the championship in the 126-pound bracket. Wenlund earned a win by fall in the first round of his opening match against Parkrose’s Ethan Day. In the semifinals, Wenlund pinned Sandy’s Dakota Peterson with four seconds remaining in the second round to advance to the title match.

Wenlund faced Tualitan’s Jeff Whitaker in the championship bout, and it was a good one. Wenlund entered that match with a 16-0 record this season, Whitaker at 15-4, and it was apparent early that both wrestlers were too tough to go down by fall. Wenlund proved to be the tougher of the two and he squeezed out the win by decision, 3-0.

Luke Youngberg bulldozed his first two opponents at 182 pounds. He beat Union’s Zach Berfanger by technical fall (17-0), then South Salem’s Vincent Villareal by major decision (13-4). Tualitan’s Frank Giannone got the best of Youngberg in the title bout with an 11-4 win, and Youngberg left with second place.

Stone Rathbun (145 pounds) and Steven Weaver (160 pounds) each scored third-place finishes in their weight classes. Rathbun looked solid in his first two matches, but had the misfortunate to meet Parkrose’s Josh Reyes in the semifinals. Reyes is the 5A defending state champion at 145 pounds, and is an overwhelming favorite to repeat. Rathbun fell to Reyes, 26-9, but bounced back to knock off Sandy’s Blane Hays in the third-place match.

Weaver won his opening match 8-0, then fell to Sandy’s C.J. McKinnis who went on to take the title. Weaver’s opponent in the third-place match could not compete due to injury.

Cole Eakin added to the team score by finishing fourth in the 152-point division, Josh Cole took fifth at 113 pounds and 138-pounder Zack Jones secured sixth place.
