1983

An Estacada Optimist Club member sought to sponsor Sue McIlhenny, a regional sales manager with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to join the service club.

However, the club’s board of directors declined to consider McIlhenny’s membership application because she was a woman.

The president of the Estacada Optimist Club said that the club could lose a number of benefits if it broke with the rules of the national Optimist Club organization and allowed a woman to join. He added that there was an apparent need for a women’s service club in Estacada.

In other news, Estacada School District Superintendent Gail Perkins dropped $3,500 on two robot kits that would serve as prizes for winners of the district’s model cities contest.

1993

Estacada school officials hoped Oregonians would vote for a statewide sales tax. Revenue would go toward restoring programs, supplies and jobs that had been lost in a recent round of budget cuts.

2003

Project Impact, part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, headed to Estacada to install earthquake reinforcement materials in Estacada classrooms.

2012

Actors from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival visited Estacada High School to give a short performances and hold workshops.
