Estacada teacher honored by American Legion
Cindy Babikoff has been named Oregon's teacher of the year by the American Legion.
Babikoff, who teaches English at Estacada High School, was previously named Estacada's teacher of the year by the American Legion Carl Douglas Post in April.
"As concerned citizens and veterans, Legionnaires have always held our educational system in highest regard," Flynn Phillips, adjutant for Estacada's American Legion Carl Douglas Post, wrote in a press release. "Is our desire to recognize the contributions made by the teachers of our youth and future leaders on a day-in and day-out basis."
The purpose of the Teacher of the Year Award is to recognize educators who "build our nation's future by working with the youth of today."
"Just like veterans, teachers are the unsung heroes who build our nation's future," Phillips wrote.
Babikoff teaches a variety of courses at Estacada High School, including AP English and strategic reading. She strives to help all of her students gain a better understanding of what they read.
As a teacher, one of her goals is to help students better understand what they read.
"Until I was working on my reading endorsement (in graduate school), I assumed everybody read the book and saw moving pictures," she told the Estacada News in a previous interview. "I want to help (students) connect with that image and bridge that gap I didn't know existed."
Babikoff enjoys the variety of insights her students bring to class.
"They all bring something different to the table," she said.
Ryan Carpenter, interim superintendent of the Estacada School District, praised Babikoff's "innate ability to close the gap with students who read several grade levels below their peers."
"She has helped hundreds of students graduate on time by guiding students to gain confidence and use their full potential in their reading and writing," he added.
Babikoff has worked for the Estacada School District since 2004.
This is the second year that Estacada High School has won the Oregon's Teacher of the Year Award by the American Legion Department of Oregon. In 2016, Kari Hulsey of Clackamas River Elementary School was honored at both the local and state levels.
