Council approves budget

The Estacada City Council formally adopted the $7,371,344 2014-15 budget during its meeting on Monday, June 23.

Changes from the previously approved budget include:

n Funding for the city’s economic development position was redistributed from the non-departmental economic development fund. $62,580 toward the position will come from the Administrative Personal Services fund and $14,305 will come from the Planning Personal Services fund.

n In order to cover an increase in street lighting fees, $21,200 was transferred from the general fund to the street fund.

n The library fund’s revenue was increased by $15,000 thanks to a grant from the Estacada Area Literary Foundation for a new sign for the Estacada Public Library.

Clackamas River Basin Council offers guided hike

Clackamas River Basin Council is offering a guided Bull of the Woods Fire tour hike on Saturday, July 12.

This moderate to strenuous 10.5-mile route takes hikers through wilderness areas of the Bull of the Woods Fire Complex of 2010 and the Mother Lode Fire of 2011.

Hikers will be treated to far-ranging views, wildflowers sightings and visits to high mountain lakes.

Boyce will discuss fire ecology and fire management in Western Oregon.

Hikers will meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Clackamas river Ranger District, 595 N.W. Industrial Way, Estacada.

This is a full day hike.

This tour is limited to 12 participants, so sign up fast!

Don’t forget to bring plenty of water, a camera, bug spray and a lunch. Layered clothing is a good idea as temperatures in the upper watershed are cooler than in town. Wear appropriate footwear.

Hidden Oaks Llama Ranch to host national event

Hidden Oaks Llama Ranch will host the annual Back Country Llama Rendezvous and Drive-In, a national gathering of working llamas, Friday through Sunday, June 27-29.

Activities will be held at the Hidden Oaks Llama Ranch in Estacada or in Milo McIver State Park.

Learning to pack with llamas is the focus of this year’s event. Anyone interested is invited to attend.

Expert llama trainers and packers will teach techniques and facilitate llama handling experience.

Other features of the event include:

  • Cart pulling llamas and their trainers will be present to share their knowledge. People are encouraged to bring their own carts and driving llamas to participate if they would like.

  • There will be a trail course with obstacles to help train pack llamas.

  • A Pack Llama Trial Association (PLTA) pack trial for basic and advanced levels will be held during the event. PLTA officials will be present to explain the requirements for certification and to discuss the goals of the association.

    The event costs $45 per adult and $10 for ages 10-18. Group discounts, a 50 percent discount for 4-H and FFA members, and an optional family rate of $90 are also available. Permitting, insurance, food, attendance and participation in events throughout the weekend are included in the price.
