Vacant house goes up in flames during botched gasoline theft

by: COURTESY OF ESTACADA RURAL FIRE DISTRICT NO. 69 - Estacada, Boring, Sandy, Colton and Clackamas firefighters responded to the blaze. According to a news release issued by the Clackamas County Sheriff’s office, at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, a witness told authorities that he watched a white Subaru pull up to the property near the Clackamas River and park in a secluded area.

The witness called the police after he saw two men walk to the rear of the house. Shortly after, the witness saw the Subaru drive off and realized the house was on fire.

That's when the fire started.Estacada, Boring, Sandy, Colton and Clackamas firefighters responded to the blaze which had spread quickly through the house and caused extensive damage.

A nearby Sheriff’s Office deputy located the Subaru as it was leaving the scene.

by: CONTRIBUTED - Richard GardnerThe car’s occupants, James Carden, 48, of Estacada, and Richard Gardner, 22, of Eagle Creek, allegedly told deputies they had drilled through the gas tank of a vehicle in the garage in an attempt to steal gas when flames suddenly ignited.

Carden and Gardner were arrested on allegations of first-degree burglary and first-degree criminal mischief.

They were lodged in the Clackamas County Jail. Bail was set at $65,000.
