Laurel, Wade Streets to receive makeover

The city of Estacada has received grant funds to renovate Laurel Road and Wade Street.

Laurel Street will be paved and sidewalks and curbs will be installed in spring or summer 2014.

The city received $140,000 Community Development Block Grant funds, which will be applied to the project.

A $50,000 Special Cities Allotment Grant was awarded to Estacada to resurface and repair Wade Street.

“We will hopefully be doing that by next summer,” said Bill Elliott, city manager.

The Oregon Department of Transportation awards Special Cities Allotment grants to cities with fewer than 5,000 residents.

District to order two new school buses

The Estacada School District will soon have two new buses.

State law requires all Oregon school buses with diesel engines to be retrofitted with 2007 equivalent engines and 2007 fine particulate matter capture technology by Jan. 1, 2017, or replaced with school buses manufactured on or after Jan. 1, 2007, by Jan. 1, 2025.

Out of the 30 buses in the district’s fleet, 26 will have to be replaced or retrofitted in order for the district to comply with the law.

Estacada School District Operations Manager Gary Lewis expects the district will replace some of the buses and retrofit others.

Two buses are about to be crossed off that to-do list.

During the November school board meeting, the Estacada School Board approved $125,293 for the purchase of a new 84-passenger bus and $64,907 for the purchase of a new 18-passenger bus.

Donna Cancio, the district’s business manager, said that the cost of the buses will not come out of the general fund, but from money granted by the state.

Lewis expects the order for the two new buses to be finalized this week.
