Estacada Public Library turns 100

Celebration planned for Saturday, Sept. 7

During the centennial celebration, patrons will have the opportunity to purchase a commemoration of their name in the quilt. The Estacada Public Library turns 100 this year and the staff is going all out with preparations for the library’s centennial celebration on Saturday, Sept. 7.

“There’s almost new developments everyday,” said Estacada Public Library Director Michele Kinnamon.

The day will kick off with live music from the Upriver Dulcimers.

“It’s a group of ladies from our area that provide really heavenly music,” explained Kinnamon.

As guests enjoy the music, they’ll get to check out the Estacada library history display reference librarian Annie Sprague has been working so hard on.

Sprague has been digging through a large box of items from the library’s and city’s history. The items have been donated to the library over the years.

“It’s been really fun to look through,” she said.

In looking through the box, Sprague has come across a library card from 1936, an original town charter and historical papers, photographs and oral histories; including a few that explain how Estacada got its name.

Sprague has been cataloguing the items. The hope is that people will be able to look at the items for research purposes.

“What people would be able to do is not check them out and take them home but look at them like a normal archive,” Kinnamon said.

“If people would like to see what we already have, we will be ready to do that soon and will announce it,” she wrote in a later email.

Kinnamon explained that there is a mysterious gap in information on the Estacada library between 1925-1991.

“If there is anyone that’s knowledgeable (about that period of the library’s history) they’re welcome to fill in the gaps. They can come talk to me, that would be fun,” she said.

Although Kinnamon explained that while the library does not have the staff nor the time to become a “history repository” they would like to receive items that pertain specifically to the library’s history.

“The emphasis is if someone has library history, we really want library history above and beyond everything else,” she said.

Sprague is also working on a display of children’s books from 100 years ago for the library’s centennial celebration on Sept. 7.

Kinnamon explained that the display includes many recognizable titles of children’s books still read today.

At noon on Sept. 7, the library has arranged to treat patrons with three guest speakers.

Oregon State Librarian MaryKay Dahlgreen will give a brief talk on library history.

Local historian Kathryn Hurd will speak on the history of the Estacada Public Library.

Author Stevan Allred will read an original, never-before-heard piece on his personal experience with libraries and their importance in his life.

The Estacada natives behind Pure Bliss Bakery in Oregon City will make a gourmet cake for the occasion. Cake will be served with coffee or lemonade at 1 p.m.

The library will host an open house from 2-4 p.m.

There will be a Trivia Hunt with a grand prize provided by a local business.

Patrons will have the opportunity to purchase a quilt square commemorating their name in the quilt that Skip-a-Week quilt club is making in honor of the library’s centennial.

Library tote bags will be for sale.

Kinnamon suspects there will be another musical act that will perform songs from 100 years ago.

All in all, it’s shaping up to be quite a to-do.

“Everybody is invited,” Kinnamon said. “It’s not just limited to one group of people, to the donors, it’s for everybody.”

Can you fill in the gaps?
