Letter: Dave Dahl's run-in highlights need for loving care

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Dave Dahl’s recent run-in with police (“Dave’s wild ride ends up in court,” Nov. 20). I have known Dave for a few years, and we share bi-polar illness. Dave was gracious enough to agree without hesitation to speak to a large gathering I was in charge of.

I have seen him volunteer to tell his story to several other groups. He is such a generous man, and he tells such an amazing story of hope for so many. Mental illness can be crippling, and I can just imagine the pressure and stress of being the face of a $50 million company that continues to expand at break-neck speed. Dave deserves all the love and care that our system can muster, for he will get well again, and he will continue to serve the community for many years to come.

I ask all involved in the system that punished the mentally ill as criminals to open their hearts, not just for Dave, but for all of us who live with crippling mental illness.
