Northwest Oregon Conference baseball coaches voted Putnam's Sam Booth and La Salle Prep's Ole Arntson co-Players of the Year

REVIEW/NEWS PHOTO: JIM BESEDA - Putnam's Sam Booth batted .415 with six doubles, four homers and 18 RBIs in 17 league games.Putnam senior shortstop Sam Booth earned a reputaiton as a consummate leadoff batter for the Kingsmen.

In 17 Northwest Oregon Conference games, Booth batted .415 (17 for 41) with six doubles, four homers, 18 RBIs, and 23 runs scored. He also drew 24 walks and got hit by a pitch twice, giving him a jaw-dropping .642 on-base percentage.

A four-year starter, Booth landed on the all-NWOC first team for the third year in a row and was named the league's co-Player of the Year with La Salle Prep's Ole Arntson after the Kingsmen went 14-3 and finished tied for second with Wilsonville, one game behind league champion La Salle Prep.

"It's a great honor," said Booth, who plans to continue his playing career at Lane Community College in Eugene. "A lot of hard work went into that, plus lots of support from my parents and my teammates."

Booth found his way on base at least once in all 17 league games and came around to score at least one run in all but three games.

Among his season highlights was a 10-3 win over Parkrose on April 22 when he had two walks, a double and a home run with fwo RBIs and three runs scored.

A week later, Booth went 2-for-2 with a walk, a double, and a grand slam home run, leading the Kingsmen to a 10-3 win over La Salle Prep.

"Sam was a rock for us," Putnam coach Chad McGowan said. "When he would get on base, if our Nos. 2, 3 and 4 guys were executing the way they could, he'd score almost every time he got on base.

"A guy like that, the way he could swing it for power and then to have over 20 walks in league play was unreal. His on-base percentage was crazy, so for our leadoff batter to be on base as much as Sam was … it was unbelievable. We're going to miss him next year."

Arntson, who split playing time between first base and pitcher for La Salle, hit safely in 15 of 17 league games, finishing with an impressive .509 batting average (28 for 55) with eight doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs.

A University of the Pacific prospect, Arnston had nine multiple-hit games in league play, including a season-high four-hit outing with three doubles in a 14-5 rout of Milwaukie.

Milwaukie's Bradley McVay and Wilsonville's Cage Gloster were recognized as the NWOC's co-Pitchers of the Year, and La Salle's Jake Austin was named the league's Coach of the Year.

McVay, the University of Portland-bound left-hander, made seven appearances for the Mustangs with six starts, going 2-4 with a 0.58 ERA. In 36 innings pitched, he surrendered 20 runs (three earned runs) on 25 hits with seven walks and 57 strikeouts.
