Combs, McLean in record form

Clackamas girls are tough as nails as they rout Canby 94-51

With a record turnout of 250 athletes, coach Jeff Kelleher sees a bright, bright future ahead for Clackamas High School track and field.by: JOHN LARIVIERE - CAROLINE COMBS

“It’s a building year for Clackamas guys,” Kelleher said. “Except for Connor [senior standout Connor McLean], the guys are pretty young and inexperienced. But they’re going to just keep getting better and better.

“The girls have taken their lumps over the last two years, and I think they’re going to be pretty good. If we put everybody in the right places, I think the girls could be a very strong team by district. I think they can challenge for the league title.”

The Cavalier girls made some noise last week. They opened the Three Rivers League dual season with a 94-51 win over Canby in a meet contested at West Linn on Wednesday (April 9), and they came back on Friday and scored 396 team points and finished second only to state girls track and field powerhouse Sheldon (483-1/2) at an eight-team meet hosted by Westview.

“Caroline Combs set a new school record in the javelin,” Kelleher said, following the dual win over the Cougars. “She also had a PR in the long jump. She went 17-5-1/2, and she fell backward on the jump.”

Combs, a junior, won the javelin with an effort of 123-10. She bettered her mark in the long jump last Friday, soaring 18-2-1/2 at a meet at Westview.

Combs’ marks rank her No. 1 in the TRL in both the javelin and long jump, and she ranks among the best in the state in the long jump.

The old Clackamas High School record for the javelin was 121-8, set by Laura Cooper in 2004.

“We think the school record for the long jump [19-0 by Nicole Barber in 2000] is within reach for Caroline,” said Kelleher.

Combs also won the 400 (1:00.33) at Westview.

Alli Dickey, another junior, was big for the Cavaliers in the Canby dual, where she came through with winning marks in the high jump (4-10), high hurdles (15.51) and low hurdles (47.88).

She won the low hurdles by a second with a PR of 47.33 at Westview, tied for first place in the high hurdles (15.56) and cleared 5-0 for fourth place in the high jump.

Converted from a quartermiler to a hurdler this spring, Dickey’s marks in the hurdles rank her among the best in the TRL this season.

Kelleher is also encouraged by freshman distance runner Maia Edwards. Edwards, who placed 16th at state in cross country last fall, already has times this spring of 2:29.89 in the 800, 5:00.60 in the 1,500 and 10:59.60 in the 3,000.

Her times rank her in the top three in the TRL in the 1,500 and in the 3,000. She won the 800 in last week’s dual meet.

Edwards placed third in the 1,500 — back of Grant star Ella Donaghu (4:40.35) and Sunset’s Charlotte Corless (4:57.13) — at Westview.

Clackamas junior Amarachi Nwokoma last week led Clackamas to a sweep of the first three places in the 100-meter dash, with an effort of 13.29, at West Linn. And Cavalier junior Marissa Kelly had the top performance of the day in the triple jump, at 31-11.

by: JON HOUSE - CONNOR McLEANMcLean had a big meet for Clackamas boys at Westview, winning the high hurdles in 14.98, the intermediate hurdles in 38.82, the long jump at 21-10-1/4, and clearing 15-6 for first place in the pole vault.

His hurdles marks were just off his personal records of 14.90 and 38.73.

McLean has already set new personal and school records in the pole vault this year, clearing 16-0 at two different meets. He had held the record heading into this season, at 15-4.

“I think he’s got the potential to go over 17 feet,” said Kelleher.

Through competition last Friday, McLean ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 6A in the pole vault (16-0), No. 2 in the intermediate hurdles (38.82), No. 2 in the long jump (22-3) and No. 3 in the high hurdles (14.90).

The Cavaliers get a break from competition this week. They return to TRL action next Wednesday, when they entertain Oregon City.
