Oregon City girls meet their match
Undefeated against teams from Oregon, the Oregon City Pioneers met their match at the Nike Tournament of Champions girls basketball tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., during the Christmas break.
The Pioneers went 1-2 in the tournament, defeating Dillard, Fla. 59-34, but coming up short in games with Salesian, Calif. (64-60 loss in overtime) and Bishop ODowd, Calif. (52-39).
The Pioneers struggled to slow 6-0 power forward Mariya Moore in the overtime loss to Salesian, the runner-up in California in Division 4 last season. Moore scored 35 of Salesians 64 points. Toria Bradford (16 points) led three Oregon City players who reached double digits in scoring in the loss.
Cold shooting cost the Pioneers in their loss to defending Northern California champion Bishop ODowd. The Pioneers out-rebounded their taller opponents 41-34 and they had four fewer turnovers, but they couldnt get their outside shots to drop. Bradford had a team high 10 points in the losing effort.
Jessica Gertz (19 points), Cierra Walker (17 points, 7 assists) and Bradford (eight steals) headed the effort in the 59-34 win over Dillard, the defending state champion in Florida.
We are pleased with our progress, said Oregon City coach Kurt Guelsdorf. Despite two losses, we are doing some things well that will help us in our goals for March back home in Oregon.
