OCs Harthun excels at Alaska-Fairbanks
Sam Harthun, a 2012 graduate of Oregon City High School, continues to make a name for herself in volleyball at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
Harthun, who a year ago was honored as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball Co-Rookie of the Year, last week was honored as GNAC Red Lion Co-Offensive Player of the Week for her play during the week of Oct. 14-20.
The honor was made in recognition of her play in two road matches during the week. The 6-0 sophomore outside hitter had a conference-leading 44 kills in GNAC matches with No. 7-ranked Western Washington and Simon Fraser, both 3-0 losses.
Her 26 kills at Simon Fraser were a GNAC season high for any player in the conference, just one short of the conference record (27) for a three-set match. She hit .457 for the match, her second best percentage of the season. Harthun had 18 kills at No. 7 Western Washington.
The 26 kills in the Oct. 19 match with Simon Fraser was the 18th time in 20 matches this season that Harthun had double-digit kills. Through 20 matches, Harthun led the NWOC in total kills (275) and kills per set (4.23).
Last weeks honor was the second time this season that Harthun had garnered Player of the Week honors. She was also named Co-Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 16-22, when she led all players in the GNACs opening weekend, with 31 total kills.
