OC harriers excel at home
Lacey, Swyter, Nelson and Lowe finish top 10
Oregon City had no fewer than four runners place in the top 10 at the recent Oregon City Invitational Cross Country Meet, hosted by the Pioneers on Sept. 21.
Oregon City senior Al Lacey completed the Pioneers 5,000-meter home course in 16:15.59, a personal record by some 20 seconds. He placed third in the 52-runner varsity boys field, trailing only David Douglas freshman Ahmed Muhumed (15:54.34) and David Douglas junior Abdul Ahmed (15:57.03).
Oregon City sophomore James Swyter also had a good day, crossing the finish line eighth, with a 16:46.47 clocking.
Oregon City junior Miranda Nelson (20:02) and Pioneer senior Kaelynn Lowe (20:02) placed sixth and seventh respectively in the 52-runner varsity girls field. David Douglas sophomore Kennedy Allen was a runaway winner, completing the race in 18:24.84, nearly a minute in front of the next best runner.
Led by senior Morgan Webber (16:40.69, fifth place), Canby had four boys place in the top 10 and the Cougar guys won the boys division of the meet, scoring 41 points. They were followed by David Douglas (44 points), Oregon City (67), The Dalles (100), Southridge (133) and Central (143).
Southridge (62) edged David Douglas (64) for first place in the girls meet. Rounding out the scoring were: The Dalles (88), Estacada (96), Canby (113), Oregon City (115) and Central (126).
The meet was scored as a league dual for Canby and Oregon City, with the Cougar boys prevailing 22-34 and the Cougar girls winning 25-33.
Oregon City coach Brandon Lee said he was pleased with his charges showing.
My team had personal bests across the board, he said.
Lee said he believes that Lacey will be in the hunt for the Three Rivers League boys title this year, and that Nelson and Lowe look to be in the running for a league berth at state on the girls side.
Other scorers for Oregon City boys were: junior Joseph Heisler, 16th (17:21); junior Jordan Howell, 17th (17:26); and sophomore Brian Frazier, 28th (18:04).
Other scorers for Oregon City girls were; sophomore Corina Stilwell, 37th (23:21); junior Raegen Lyon, 38th (23:36); and junior Brigitte Decker, 42nd (24:01).
Milwaukie had no varsity girls team and an incomplete varsity boys team entered in the competition. Senior Chris Spanovich led Milwaukie boys, placing 19th (17:27).
