Youthful Falcons rally past Douglas 21-18
Michael Duarte leads the way in a 21-18 victory
Sporting a lineup decimated by graduation, the La Salle Prep Falcons got the monkey off their backs last Friday, winning a 21-18 Class 4A football barnburner from Douglas.
The win followed a 29-3 loss to Central in the Falcons Aug. 30 season opener.
The Douglas game went down to the wire, with Michael Duarte putting the winning points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 17-yard run.
It was Duartes second score of the game. The 5-11, 165-pound junior receiver also had a 40-yard pass reception in the second quarter that put the Falcons up 14-6.
Duarte generated over 100 yards in offense for the game, with three catches for 63 yards, and 43 yards rushing.
Another 165-pound junior, Nash Lisac, scored La Salles only other touchdown and headed the Falcon ground attack, rushing 17 times for 80 yards.
Freshman Jeremy Davenport split the uprights for a 21-yard field goal in the first quarter of the Central game, but that was the Falcons only scoring in that contest.
Lisac headed a La Salle ground attack that netted only 157 yards, rushing 17 times for 106 yards.
La Salle 6-2, 140-pound junior quarterback Alex Sherrill completed 16-of-30 passes for 131 yards, with two interceptions.
Despite the sluggish offense, the Falcons kept the game close most of the way, trailing 8-3 at halftime and 15-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
La Salle (1-1) plays Philomath (2-0) on the road this Friday, and the Falcons wrap up the preseason on Friday, Sept. 20, when they entertain Banks (2-0).
