Mustangs bite the bullet at Sandy

Injury and a dropped baton prove costly

by: PHOTO BY PARKER LEE - Milwaukie seniors Dominique Meade (left) and Richard Ramsey went one-two in the 100-meter dash in last weeks meet at Sandy, but a disqualification in the sprint relay cost Milwaukie the meet.Misfortune struck and Milwaukie High School thinclads fell to Sandy in a hotly contested Northwest Oregon Conference track and field meet at Sandy April 17.

Milwaukie girls fell to their Sandy counterparts 74-71, while Milwaukie guys lost 79-66.

The girls meet came down to a mishap in the low hurdles.

Milwaukie senior MacKenzie West was leading heading into the final straightaway of the 300-meter hurdles race when she felt something pop in the back of her leg and went down. Sandy placed first and second in the race and earned enough points to lock up the 74-71 dual win.

Prior to the injury, West had won the high hurdles (17.85) and finished runner-up to classmate Alex Noren (16-1-1/4) with an effort of 15-10-1/2 in the long jump. The injury forced West to withdraw from the triple event, an event in which she would have also likely scored for the Mustangs.

The misfortune for Milwaukie boys occurred in the first running event of the afternoon, the 4x100-meter relay. Milwaukie senior Dominique Meade went out strong in the relay, building his team a 10-meter advantage. But the Mustangs had a substitute runner in the second leg — filling in for an injured teammate — and the substitute took the handoff from Meade outside the exchange area, disqualifying Milwaukie's team. Milwaukie had the better time in the event by two seconds heading into the meet.

“It started in the relay and only got worse from there,” said Milwaukie boys coach Chuck Nott. “Except for the jumps, we didn't have a very good meet. They handled us on the track. It was Sandy's last home league meet and it was their senior night, and I think they wanted it more than we did.”

Sandy boys swept the 400 and 1,500, and the Pioneer guys outscored their Mustang counterparts 59-23 on the track.

Dominique Meade, Dante Meade and Trevontae Anderson were tough for Milwaukie boys in the jumps. Dominique won the 100-meter dash (11.62) and he leaped 22-0-1/2 to outclass the field in the long jump. The effort in the long jump is the best by any NWOC athlete this season by close to a foot.

“It's the first time since 2000 that we've had someone go 22 feet,” Nott said.

Dante Meade (42-9-1/2) and Anderson (42-3-1/2) went one-two in the triple jump with marks that rank them first and second in the NWOC in that event.

Anderson also cleared 5-10 to win the high jump.

And the Mustangs were tough in the pole vault, where Jordan Stromvig (12-0), Griffin Johnson (10-6) and Nathan Kundert (9-6) swept the event. Stronvig's mark equals the best by any NWOC pole vaulter this season.

Kendrick Bourne (16.00) won the high hurdles with little difficulty.

Milwaukie's only other winner was Jake Leary, who headed the field in both the shot put (47-11-1/2) and discus (139-7).

Milwaukie girls scored in every individual event except the pole vault and they had two double winners — Sasha Gonzalez in the 800 (2:32.59) and 1,500 (5:05.35), and Noren in the long jump and high jump (4-10).

Milwaukie senior Cordaja Ware won the 100 (13.22) and earned second place in the 200 (27.33); Milwaukie junior Becky Ponnay won the 400 (1:04.03) and placed second in the 3,000 (12:54.00); Milwaukie junior Kayler Hammond-Stief (108-2) won the discus and Mustang senior April Meads (106-5) won the javelin.

Through competition last week, Milwaukie and Sandy boys both sported 2-1 records in league; Sandy girls were 2-1 and Milwaukie girls were 1-2.

Milwaukie faces a stiff challenge this afternoon when the Mustangs entertain Liberty. Liberty girls are undefeated in the NWOC. Liberty boys dropped a heartbreaker last week, when they fell to Wilsonville 73-72, their first league dual loss of the season.
