North Clackamas Arts Guild show on Aug. 5 features the work of 20 local artists, while showing 'their interpretation of the world around them'

Shawn Van Doren believes that "viewing art in all its forms opens us up to broader views of the physical world and perhaps broadens our view of society as well."

SUBMITTED PHOTO - Shawn Van Doren, one of the artists showing her work in the North Clackamas Arts Guild show, poses with her paintings on the side of a 'Pooh van.' The upcoming North Clackamas Arts Guild show on Aug. 5 features the work of 20 local artists, while showing "their interpretation of the world around them," she said.

The annual event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 5501 S.E. Thiessen Road, in Milwaukie. Admission is free.

The North Clackamas Arts Guild is a 24-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to the appreciation and understanding of the arts, the encouragement of new artists and promotion of art interests throughout the community. Its members come from all over the county, including Oregon City, West Linn, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Happy Valley and Clackamas.

Van Doren is the vice president of the arts guild, managing the website and producing the newsletter. This year, the guild has partnered with Portland Fine Arts Guild and Clackamas County's chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

"We are not a juried show, but we do give awards for art in several categories," she said, adding that all artwork must be framed in order to be displayed.

Included will be works in oil, watercolor, acrylic, graphite and mixed media.

Van Doren is participating in the event for the first time. She will show a landscape in oil, an animal portrait in acrylic, and a leaf study in acrylic with 18 layers of transparent glazes.

"The best thing about this exhibit is the inclusion of local artists in a low-key atmosphere that encourages artists to show their work," Van Doren said. "We have some very accomplished artists showing, as well as artists who have never shown before and artists who have, perhaps, never even done art before."

She added, "Art is a representation of our thoughts, feelings and reactions to the world around us and our interpretations of that world. That is the reason to see any presentation, whether it is visual, textual or verbal.
