Gladstone Fire Department volunteers last month voted Dan Sotin as their firefighter of the year.
Although not an award for heroism, this award is presented annually to a Gladstone volunteer who has given selflessly of themselves in support of the fire department and the community at large.
Sotin was recognized by his peers for always thinking outside the box and dedicating himself to help anyone in need. Rather than questioning why he is asked to do various tasks around the station, he is known for offering suggestions on how to make the tasks easier or better.
Sotin strives to improve and get more certifications. Always seen as a professional, he takes pride in all he does.
Sotin also has taken time away from his family to volunteer at the station during times when a low number of people were taking night shifts. He also takes time to help train others.
Gladstone Fire Department Lt. Kirk Stempel said he has had many opportunities to work closely with Sotin.
"I have not only found him to be an extremely hard-working individual, but a very exceptional friend," Stempel said. "When Dan is given a project to work on, he not only completes it in a timely manner, but he looks for ways to improve it. Dan pays attention to detail like no one I know. Every project he has done was completed with perfection."
