Libke's name added to Salem memorial

In preparation for Oregon’s Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Ceremony, the names of Oregon City Reserve Officer Robert Libke and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Charles H. Basye were added last week to the Salem memorial honoring 180 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty since the 1880s.

The ceremony officially honoring them will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the Oregon Public Safety Academy to pay by: OREGON DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY STANDARDS AND TRAINING - Oregon City Reserve Officer Robert Libke and Jackson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Charles H. Basyes names are etched into the memorial honoring 180 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty statewide.respects to fallen officers from city, county, state, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies who have served as law enforcement officers, corrections officers, and parole and probation officers.

The Oregon Board on Public Safety Standards and Training approved the addition of the two officers to honor and remember their sacrifices among the state’s other fallen officers and the families they left behind.

Libke was dispatched to a report of a house fire Nov. 3 and was shot at the scene by a suicidal man. Libke was transported to Emanuel Hospital in Portland, where he died from his injuries on Nov. 4. Serving as a reserve officer with the Oregon City Police Department since 2009, Libke, 41, left behind a wife and unborn child.

Basye was murdered by an inmate during an escape from the Jackson County Jail on June 12, 1917, and his death was unknown for many years until research done by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office located additional details.
