Milwaukian on duty for 'Exercise Cajun Care'

Air National Guard Tech Sgt. Oren T. Bergfald, a graduate of Milwaukie High School who now specializes in optometry care, has been helping provide free medical care to residents of rural Louisiana during “Exercise Cajun Care” from Feb. 25 through March 6.

“It is a great feeling to help people see better and develop a stronger sense of well-being,” Bergfald said.

Bergfald is among approximately 120 Navy and Air National Guard medical professionals who are expected to provide medical, dental and optometry care to more than 2,000 people where the military has set up in a former nursing home.

Through this Department of Defense-sponsored “Innovative Readiness Training,” Exercise Cajun Care is designed to provide U.S. military medical professionals valuable training as well as provide health care options to a medically underserved community. The program is in its 20th year, with this year’s exercise providing Abbeville-area residents a collective health care benefit valued at more than $1 million.
