Ralls of MHS receives best-in-state honors

Milwaukie High School’s Michael Ralls was honored as the top assistant principal in the state.

by: NCSD - Ralls“This recognition validates the hard work that school administrators do daily to positively impact kids’ lives,” Ralls said. “I am blessed to work with a team that trusts and supports me, and to work with teachers and staff who care daily about doing what’s best for kids.”

Kevin J. Ricker, principal of Centennial High School and president of the Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators, oversaw the group of his peers that selected Ralls.

“The Assistant Principal of the Year Award was presented to Michael Ralls for his dedication and pursuit in providing each student an outstanding individualized and supported education,” Ricker said.

As part of his nomination of Ralls, Principal Mark Pinder wrote that Ralls was key in increasing MHS student achievement. Over the past five years. Oregon Department of Education twice named the school Outstanding, and the international education leadership association earlier this year gave MHS the Vision in Action Whole Child Award, a rare national honor.

Ralls worked with language arts teachers to improve reading and writing scores, and he realigned the MHS algebra program to help more students reach proficient levels. He worked to improve attendance by studying how other schools with similar demographics increased attendance.

From his first day, Ralls’ passion has been about meeting the basic needs of each child, Pinder said. A health center opened a year ago on campus after Ralls led a four-year campaign to partner with staff, students, community groups and health organizations.

Ralls also could be among the finalists for the national award bestowed in February.
