Seniors steal stage at local karaoke bar

A group of 10 to 12 residents from residential care facility Homewoods on the Willamette have been going to Chan’s Steakery in Milwaukie to sing karaoke every other month for the past seven or eight months.

by: PHOTO COURTESY: LAURA ENGLE - In October, the residents of Homewoods on the Willamette wore crazy hats on their outing to karaoke night at Chans Steakery. Die-hard regulars have adopted the seniors as a regular feature at Chan’s and look forward to them coming each month.

In one memorable visit, Homewoods resident Dee Frank, 82, a renowned watercolorist and world traveler, sang “La Vie En Rose” in French under a stylish broad-brimmed hat. She told the crowd that the last time she sang it she was in Paris.

Other highlights from these outings, according to Homewoods Executive Director Laura Engle, include residents dancing with Chan’s regulars and one of the regulars singing a stirring rendition of Tom Jones’ “You Can Leave Your Hat On” to Homewoods resident Shirley Hunt.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, they will be going again wearing Santa hats, and they plan to sing “Santa Baby” as an ensemble. They are supported by a number of Homewoods staff and volunteers, including Homewoods Activity Director Martie Matthews.
