OC Farmers Market to host Householding Fair on May 18

by: 2012 PHOTO COURTESY: JACKIE HAMMOND-WILLIAMS - All-day demos and workshops, tips and ideas are featured at the Oregon City Farmers Market Householding Fair on Saturday, May 18Want to know how to raise chickens for eggs, keep bees, grow produce, preserve food, make green cleaners and skin products, recycle wool and get creative? Ask the experts and get inspired at the Oregon City Farmers Market Householding Fair, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

The market, in conjunction with Clackamas County’s Office of Sustainability, Clackamas County Soil and Water Conservation District, the Home Orchard Society, OSU Extension and many other groups and professionals, will teach and demonstrate “urban homesteading” arts that can be used in and around the city home.

Harriet Fassenfest, author of “The Householders Guide to the Universe,” will sign books and CDs. All-day demos and workshops, tips and ideas will be featured, plus a free drawing for great prizes. The Market’s Kids POP (Power Of Produce) Club will grind wheat berries using a stationary bike, then volunteers will make pancakes for the kids using the fruits of their labor.

More than 55 local farmers and vendors will sell fresh produce, meat, eggs, cheese, fresh fish, baked goods, wine, beer, cider, artisan foods, flowers, plants and crafts. Live music and hot food and drinks will be available, too.

There’s plenty of free parking nearby with good access for wheelchairs and strollers. The market is held in the parking lot of Clackamas County’s Public Services Building, 2051 Kaen Road, off Beavercreek Road, Oregon City.
