Havlyn Ehrich named KOIN 6 Athlete of the Week
For Canby's Havvy Ehrich, 2017 has been quite the year. The freshman weight lifter set Oregon lifting records in Las Vegas less than a month ago, benching 176.4 pounds and dead lifting 303.1 pounds.
Ehrich lifts on her own time and does CrossFit, and despite being recognized as one of the up and coming lifters in the state, she still finds the whole thing surreal.
"Oh man, it's really crazy actually," Ehrich said. "I feel like it hasn't happened. It's really cool, I'm actually really appreciative of it, I'm very thankful to have that. I didn't expect it to turn out like this at all."
"When I first signed up for my first meet, I was not expecting anything," Ehrich added. "I knew my mom posted something on Facebook, but I didn't expect KOIN6 to get it, or Canby Herald the first time. That's really cool."
Ehrich is also an honor roll student who is getting used to her new set up in Canby High School, and enjoying it. While certain classes are pushing her, she is also finding classes that she enjoys doing.
"Leadership is my favorite class," Ehrich said. "We have multiple projects that we do around the school. Right now we're working on pie in the face, so we're recording a CTV (Cougars TV) thing. We're just putting that together, and it's just really fun. You just get to go around the school and meet new people and pie teachers in the face."
At one point in time Ehrich was a swimmer, but has since stopped due to shoulder issues. However, she still hopes to represent Canby athletically in the spring.
"I'm hoping to do sprinting or shot put," Ehrich said. "Shot put is what I really want to try out."
While those events are on her radar, Ehrich still has her eye on the competitive lifting world. Specifically, a competition in the spring.
"I have a competition in Portland in March," Ehrich said. "I have a couple goals for that one. I'm going to see if I can get as close to 200 on my bench press as I can, and then definitely a lot more over 300 on my dead lift."
Despite the obvious muscle and strength building, Ehrich says there are other, non-physical benefits to lifting.
"I take so many character building things out of it," Ehrich said. "Definitely teaching me to be humble. Physically, I feel great. I see a lot of muscle building, and the exercise helps a lot, mentally."
