Three players and coach Mike Vaught will represent the Canby football team in this years Les Schwab Bowl.
Standout linemen Zach Kraus and Alejandro Sandoval and linebacker A.J. Schlatter are scheduled to participate in the 67th edition of the all-star game, which will kick off at 1:30 p.m. June 21 at Hillsboro Stadium.
Proceeds from the annual event, which features graduating seniors from the states two largest athletic classifications, benefit the Oregon Athletic Coaches Association general scholarship fund as well as schools in the 6A and 5A classes.
Players and coaches from the North and South squads build bonds through a variety of activities and community service in the week leading up to the game.
All three of Canbys appointees to the North squad are planning to continue their athletic careers in the collegiate ranks.
Kraus, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound lineman who earned first-team all-conference honors and all-state honorable mention as a senior center for the Cougars, is gearing up to play football at College of the Siskiyous in northern California.
Kraus anchored a front line that paved the way for Canbys powerful rushing attack, which amassed an average of 293.8 yards per game this past season.
Sandoval, a 6-foot-1, 235-pound defensive lineman who earned first-team all-league and second-team all-state recognition, will soon join the Southern Oregon wrestling program. He took second place at the OSAA state championships in the heavyweight division this past winter.
Blessed to have one last high school football game with the best!!! he tweeted after being offered a spot.
Schlatter plans to join the Portland State football team as a walk-on. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound linebacker earned first-team all-league and second-team all-state honors this past season after leading the Cougars in solo tackles, total tackles, tackles for loss, sacks and forced fumbles.
Vaught, who guided Canby to the Class 6A state semifinals in 2013, will serve as the North squads defensive coordinator on a staff spearheaded by Central Catholics Steve Pyne. Beavertons Bob Boyer, Glencoes Steve Jones, Sherwoods Greg Lawrence and Roosevelts Christian Swain will also coach the North team.
The North roster features several other Three Rivers League stars, including Clackamas running back Dan Sherrell, West Linn quarterback Hayden Coppedge, Oregon City defensive back Clay Valenzuela-Reece and Clackamas offensive lineman David Reese.
Silvertons John Mannion will oversee a South coaching staff that also includes Ashlands Charlie Hall, Springfields Dave Heuberger, North Medfords Mike Mitchell, McNarys Isaac Parker and West Salems Shawn Stanley.
