Austin Berkey placed second and Ethan Berkey took third in the singles bracket to lead the North Marion boys tennis team at the Special District 2 championships last week at Portland Tennis Center.
Austin Berkey, who earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament, cruised to the finals before falling to La Salle Prep senior Xander Hey in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 4-6.
Ethan Berkey fell 6-4, 6-1 to Hey in the semifinals but bounced back in the consolation title match with a 6-1, 6-3 upset of second-seeded Estacada senior Tomas Cunha.
Both Berkey brothers qualified for the small-school state championships for the second year in a row.
Fourth-seeded senior partners Grant Barrow and Dillan Jackson led the Huskies in the doubles bracket, taking fourth place to earn an OSAA berth.
Barrow and Jackson defeated La Salle Prep juniors Greg Dettmer and Jon Rast, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6, to reach the semifinals, where they fell in straight sets to top-seeded Falcons partners Wyatt Cooper and Nick Lee.
The loss dropped Barrow and Jackson into the consolation finals, where they fell 6-3, 6-2 to Cascade seniors Kyle Bivens and Kyle Schaeffer.
North Marion was also represented in the doubles bracket by senior Renaldo Caballero and junior Derek Terwilliger as well as senior Sam Packham and sophomore Tristin Rosticil.
Singles competitors included the Berkey brothers as well as seniors Pablo Francisco and Trevor Kauffman.
Cooper and Lee cruised to a district doubles title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cascade partners Nic Farr and Matthias Hawkins.
