Dance: Canby gearing up for OSAA state championships
Team to preview state routine March 19 at Canby High School
The Canby dance team has had a busy and successful winter competition season and it isnt over yet.
The Cougars now turn their attention to the state championships, which will be held March 21-22 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
Before the OSAA meet, the team will host its annual Friends and Family Preview Night at 7:30 p.m. March 19 in Canby High Schools main gym. The dancers will perform their state routine as part of the event, which is free and open to the public.
The dance team this year features 33 girls and is captained by seniors Kayla Brons, Cori Beatty, Ellen Dula, Christina Nelson, Abby Bucklein and Kelly Siewell. The team is coached by Jennifer Chaffee, Karalee Kyllo, Bailey Pfeifer and professional dancer James Healey.
The Cougars 6-minute routine is called Blot and is inspired by Rorschach ink-blot tests. It was choreographed, designed and staged by Healey.
Canbys appearance at the state meet will cap a winter season filled with accolades.
After hosting the Winter Festival of Dance event in January, the Cougars took first place in the show division Feb. 15 at the Mt. Hood and Friends Competition at Parkrose High School in Portland. Two freshmen, Haley Fitzgerald and Sara Dalling, received top-five recognition in the novice drill-down competition at the event.
The team continued to develop its show routine March 1 at the Let Dance Ring Competition at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, where it took second place.
Tickets for the state championships can be purchased at the Rose Quarter ticket booth or online. For more information, visit the Canby Cougar Dance Teams Facebook page.
