Spring sports preview 2014: Canby lacrosse, Canby rugby

Coach: Patrick Verdun (first year)

Last year: 7-9 (2-8 in the Three Rivers League); missed out on the playoffs despite earning the No. 18 ranking in the state

Key players: Trey Bellmore, Justin Eggimann, Collin Matthias, Jordan Kahut, Kaden Parker, Halston Hoover

Key losses: Konnen Bell, Cody Sibel, Darien Coutu

Outlook: All-league honorees Trey Bellmore and Justin Eggimann return under new coach Patrick Verdun as Canby vies for a coveted playoff berth.


Coach: Kristen Brown (first year)

Last year: 1-13 (0-10 in the Three Rivers League); no playoffs

Key player: Kalei McDonald

Key losses: Danielle Hestand, Hannah Pomeroy

Outlook: Under new coach Kristen Brown, Canby will try to rebound from a trying 2013 campaign in which it lost 13 games in a row after topping Newberg in its season opener.


Coach: Greg Perez

Last year: 2-8 (1-6 in league play); took seventh place at the state tournament

Key players: Zack Larson, Austin Schwartz, Austin Jorgensen, Zach Zavala, Jeremy Loveland

Outlook: With just two returning seniors, Canby will rely on its speed and tackling skills as it vies to improve on last year’s record. Physical fitness is also a key for the Cougars this season.


Coach: Samantha Finch (first year)

Last year: 7-2; lost in the state title match to Portland-Grant, 21-17

Key players: senior flyhalf Maddison Mitchell, senior scrumhalf Makenzy Mitchell, junior Guadalupe Amezua, sophomore Carson Manning, freshman Jessica Ladrow, junior hooker Emily Egan, sophomore Acacia Dietz, senior Kendra Olsen

Key losses: Patricia Johnson, Tara Van Ness, Valerie Amezcua

Outlook: Canby is in the hunt for its eighth-straight trip to the state finals. The program has gone 43-5 over the past five seasons, including 7-2 under Ernie Espinoza last year.
