The Cougars reach the playoffs for the third time in four seasons under coach Craig Evans but are outscored 20-13 by the Irish in the final quarter.
The season came to an end for the Canby boys basketball team in a 68-57 loss to Eugene-Sheldon on the road March 5 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs.
The No. 26 Cougars advanced to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons under coach Craig Evans, but they were unable to snap a drought of six seasons without a playoff victory.
No. 7 Sheldon advances to the second round March 8 and will face No. 23 South Eugene, which upset No. 10 North Medford in the opening round.
Canby, which defeated Salem-Sprague 55-43 in the play-in round March 1, closes its campaign with a 9-15 record.
The Cougars trailed just 29-28 at halftime after a buzzer-beating halfcourt heave by sophomore guard Austin Evans, and they were within four points of the Irish (18-6) at the end of the third quarter.
But Sheldon pulled away down the stretch, outscoring the visitors 20-13 in the final eight minutes.
It was the schools first meeting in boys basketball since the Irish edged Canby 46-43 at the Les Schwab Invitational in 2008.
