Wrestling: Canby places second in TRL, heads into regional tournament

The Cougars lose to conference champion West Linn in their regular-season finale.


by: JEFF GOODMAN / PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP - Nick Strnad (right) and the Canby wrestling team will compete for state bids at the regional tournament, which will be held Feb. 21-22 at Reynolds High School in Gresham.The Canby wrestling team took second place in the Three Rivers League after falling 43-15 to West Linn on the road Feb. 11 in its conference finale.

The Cougars now turn their attention to the regional tournament, which will be held Feb. 21-22 at Reynolds High School in Troutdale.

Competitors from TRL and Mt. Hood Conference schools will contend for bids to the OSAA state championships, which are slated for Feb. 28 and March 1 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

Alejandro Sandoval, Justin Cardinale and Nick Strnad picked up contested wins for Canby (4-1 in the TRL) against the league-champion Lions. Sandoval (285) clipped Ellis Eaton 3-2, Cardinale (132) defeated Kane Snapp 12-8 and Strnad (138) won by 4-0 decision over Tad Handris.

Gus Warren (106) added the Cougars’ only other points with a win by forfeit.
