Dance: Canby wins Modern category at David Douglas, Wilsonville competitions

The Cougars qualified three routines for the Dec. 7 category championships at Oregon City High School.

by: SUBMITTED - The Canby dance team took first place in the Modern category during a Nov. 9 competition at David Douglas High School in Portland.The Canby High School dance team kicked off its fall competition season with a first-place finish and two runner-up results Nov. 9 at David Douglas High School in Portland.

The Cougars won the Modern category and placed second in the large hip-hop and kick line divisions. They qualified with all three routines for the category championships Dec. 7 at Oregon City High School.

Canby freshmen Haley Fitzgerald and Sara Dalling placed in the top 10 of the novice drill-down competition.

The Cougars returned to competition Nov. 16 at Wilsonville High School, placing first in Modern, second in kicks and fourth in hip-hop.

Fitzgerald, Dalling and Hannah Reed placed in the top 10 of the novice drill-down competition.

Four dancers — Kayla Brons, Cici Phillips, Chloe Feely and Abby Bucklein — placed in the top 10 of the advanced drill-down competition.

All top-10 finishers in drill-down qualify to compete at the category championships, where Canby will attempt to defend its title in the Modern category.

The 35-member team is coached by Jennifer Chaffee and assistants Karalee Kyllo, Bailey Pfeifer and James Healey. Kayla Brons, Cori Beatty, Christina Nelson, Kelly Siewell, Eleln Dula and Abby Bucklein are this year’s senior captains.

The Cougars will host a kids’ clinic Jan. 20.
