Fall sports preview 2013: North Marion volleyball

Without six graduated seniors, North Marion will attempt to have a better showing in league play after going winless against conference opponents last year.

by: JEFF GOODMAN / FILE - The North Marion volleyball team enters the 2013 season vying for its first league win since 2011.Following a series of camps and clinics before the beginning of the school year, the North Marion volleyball team appears to be entering its 2013 campaign with some momentum.

The Huskies will probably need it.

They lost six seniors from a group that struggled mightily last season, when the program won just one of its 17 matches and came up empty in league play.

This season, North Marion is vying for its first Tri-Valley Conference win since Oct. 18, 2011.

It’s a task the Huskies will approach after a preseason slate that includes a Sept. 12 road match against Seaside — the only team they defeated in 2012 — and their home tournament Sept. 14.

League play is scheduled to begin at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 19 at home against La Salle Prep.

Jason Ashley remains at the helm for a second season, and he’s enlisted the help of several assistants.

Kellie Wilcox-Merten will coach the junior varsity team, Teresa Chan-Chaddick will lead the JV2 team and North Marion alumna Rachel Camp is on board as a volunteer assistant.

Their collective experience will likely help North Marion on its quest for relevance in a conference that has been powerful in recent years.

Class of 2011 alumna Nicole Ferchland has also lent a hand to the program. A two-time all-league honoree during her time at North Marion, Ferchland joined the program for a clinic last month.

The team this year will likely turn to Megan Schweighardt, Carlie Donnelly, Haley Schrenk and Kylie Gonzales for production and leadership.
