College sports: Members of Canby's Class of 2013 continue athletic careers

The recent graduates will represent four states and several conferences at the next level.

They will represent four states at the next level.Canby High School’s Class of 2013 included 13 students who plan to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. They will represent four states in several different conferences. Six of them will compete in Division I, the highest level of college sports.

Here’s a look at who they are and where they’re headed:

Karley Baggerly | Women’s soccer | Gonzaga

Location: Spokane, Wash.

Conference: West Coast Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: A crafty forward who led the Cougars past the second round of the playoffs for the first time in program history, she also owns the school record in the girls long jump.

Konnen Bell | Men’s lacrosse | Oregon State

Location: Corvallis, Ore.

Conference: Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League

Level: Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association

At Canby: A leader on the boys lacrosse team, which finished this past season with a top-20 ranking, Konnen Bell was also a member of the football and boys basketball squads.

Cody Churchwell | Football | Southern Oregon

Location: Ashland, Ore.

Conference: Independent

Level: National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

At Canby: Cody Churchwell was a first-team all-conference honoree as a defensive lineman this past season. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound athlete is the first member of his family to attend a four-year university.

Bradley Klienstuber | Men’s golf | Brigham Young

Location: Provo, Utah

Conference: West Coast Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: A three-time OSAA state tournament qualifier, he was named the Three Rivers League’s player of the year this past season after carding a 144 to earn runner-up honors at the two-day district finals.

Margaret Lever | Women’s tennis | Linfield

Location: McMinnville, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Canby: Margaret Lever was a top singles player during her tenure with the Cougars and also played on the girls soccer team. She continues a long family legacy at Linfield College.

Blake Netter | Men’s golf | Corban

Location: Salem, Ore.

Conference: Cascade Collegiate Conference

Level: National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

At Canby: A three-time state qualifier during his high school career, Blake Netter logged his best OSAA finish this past season, improving by six strokes on the second day to tie for 31st place with a 154.

Mitchell North | Men’s soccer | Oregon State

Location: Corvallis, Ore.

Conference: Pac-12 Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: Mitchell North was a star goalkeeper at South Medford, but he moved to Canby for his senior year to play with the Portland Timbers youth academy. He graduated wit the Canby Class of 2013.

Nathan Pellatz | Men’s golf | Linfield

Location: McMinnville, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Canby: Nathan Pellatz qualified for the state tournament twice during his prep career, carding an impressive 1-over 73 on the first day of the Class 6A finals this past season.

Krissy Peterson | Women’s golf | Oregon State

Location: Corvallis, Ore.

Conference: Pac-12 Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: Krissy Peterson was a four-time state qualifier during her standout prep career, taking sixth place as a senior after being named the Three Rivers League player of the year.

Eddie Sanchez | Men’s soccer | Portland

Location: Portland, Ore.

Conference: West Coast Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: The star midfielder had 45 goals and 16 assists in his prep career, earning league co-MVP, Gatorade Oregon Boys Soccer Player of the Year and all-state honors as a senior.

Cody Sibel | Men’s lacrosse | Oregon

Location: Eugene, Ore.

Conference: Pacific Northwest Collegiate Lacrosse League

Level: Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association

At Canby: A second-team all-league honoree as an attacker, Cody Sibel was a key player for the Cougars and also contributed to the boys basketball team as starting point guard.

Sam Stelk | Football | Willamette

Location: Salem, Ore.

Conference: Northwest Conference

Level: Division III

At Canby: The left-handed quarterback made an impact in his only year with the Cougars, throwing for 1,158 yards and 11 touchdowns despite coping with a nagging foot injury.

Emilie Wilmes | Volleyball | Long Beach State

Location: Long Beach, Calif.

Conference: Big West Conference

Level: Division I

At Canby: The 6-foot-2 outside hitter was a well-known force in the Three Rivers League, earning first-team all-conference honors three times under coaches Bryan Kamahoahoa and Caitlin Gustin.
