Steelhead fishing workshop scheduled for April 5

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Morgan Haskett, 15, of Roseburg landed her first winter steelhead on the North Umpqua River. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will hold a steelhead fishing workshop on Saturday, April 5, on the Sandy River near Corbett.

Steelhead are one of Oregon’s most challenging but rewarding fish to catch, said Mark Newell, ODFW outdoor skills program coordinator. The ODFW is teaming up with Sandy River Chapter of the Association of Northwest Steelheaders in a hands-on workshop that will show anglers how to find and catch these hard-fighting fish.

“Participants will learn everything they need to go fishing — from tying the first knot to landing or releasing their catch,” Newell said.

This adult workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Camp Angelos, 32149 SE Stevens Road in Corbett. The cost of the workshop is $52 and includes all instruction, materials and the use of necessary gear and tackle. Participants must provide their own lunch. Registration is through the ODFW web page — go to the ODFW outdoors tab at the top of the home page and select calendar of events from the dropdown menu. For more information about the workshop, contact Mark Newell at 503-947-6018 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

All participants must have either a daily fishing license with a Columbia River endorsement or an annual fishing license with the Columbia River endorsement and a combined angling tag.
